Partnering with a State-of-the-Art Packhouse to Reduce Electricity Costs

Since November 2020, HES has partnered with CAPAC, one of the state-of-the-art packhouses of a vertically integrated fruit producer and supplier, to reduce electricity costs and improve energy efficiency.

Our Support and Achievements

Smart Metering & Energy ProfilingThis is the heading

Installed an advanced smart meter to provide detailed insight into CAPAC’s consumption patterns and identify high-cost areas.

Energy Efficiency Opportunities

Assessed and prioritised opportunities to reduce electricity use in compressed air systems, refrigeration, and lighting.

PV Solar System – Phase 1

Specified, tendered, and oversaw the installation and commissioning of a 240 kW inverter system with 350 kWp of PV panels.

  • Delivered over R1 million in electricity savings to date.
  • Registered as a Small-Scale Embedded Generator (SSEG) with Langeberg Municipality, including export permission for excess energy.
PV Solar System with Peak-Shaving – Phase 2

Designed and supported procurement, installation, and commissioning of a 350 kW inverter system with 495 kWp of PV panels and 120 kWh of battery storage.

  • Enables effective peak-shaving and further reduces reliance on Eskom.
  • Achieving savings of ±R50 000 per month, already exceeding performance expectations.
  • Currently completing SSEG registration with Langeberg Municipality.

Both solar investments were implemented under Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with Energy Partners Power, with HES serving as the engineering consultant throughout.

Results & Client Impact

HES’s partnership with CAPAC has empowered the client to manage escalating electricity costs and enhance operational resilience. CAPAC’s management team commends HES’s practical, transparent, and results-driven approach.

Following this success, CAPAC’s joint owners have engaged HES to provide energy management and solar advisory services at another of their facilities — ARISA Packhouse in Swellendam.
